Fantastic read

- 17/03/2012

Great book, A lovely read. especially about the mere. Loved the interview, more carp would have been nice and perhaps a guest chapter from Jason Hayward would rounded it off perfectly. Very refreshing book.

Lovely reads!

I've just finished reading 'Too Many Rods' and 'Magic in the Water'. Both were lovely reads and superb books to treasure for the collector.

So it's time to treat myself to another of your lovely books. Please reserve me 1x cloth bound copy of 'Great Days'.

A long time coming

- 06/03/2012

Here is a book that has been awhile in coming and I might add eagerly awaited by many who have over the years heaped praise upon the shoulders of Alan Tomkins regarding the ‘Blackwater’ series of articles that appeared years ago in Carpworld.
Well, here in this marvellous book Magic in the Water is the story of Alan Tomkins’ fishing life. He remembers in the 1950s borrowing a copy of Bernard Venables’s Mr Crabtree goes fishing, which fired his enthusiasm and was to be read many, many times. Over the years Alan has caught most freshwater fish which is reflected with chapters on perch, pike, chub, barbel, carp, trout, salmon and seatrout, roach, tench ,crucians, grayling and rudd. However it is the section on carp fishing that will grab everybody’s imagination when it culminates in catching most of the big carp in Colnemere (codename Blackwater). Although he failed to catch the black mirror he did catch the first 30lb common from there along with even larger mirrors. The lengths he went to in an attempt to achieve this goal are simply astounding. One of his friends did catch this legendary fish at over 40lbs, although Alan thinks he probably lost it on at least one occasion.
If you never had the chance to read the original ‘Blackwater’ stories they are reproduced in their entirety in this book. Following on from this the chapter also includes the fascinating ‘Colnemere Tapes’. These are never-before-published recordings that set out Alan and his friend’s (Jason Haywood and Kevin P) thoughts on fishing this now sadly-now-dead water.
The fishing stories are interspersed with thoughts and opinions that many won’t agree with, but then Alan never has been and never will be a run-of-the-mill angler and he has some strong opinions on fishing and how anglers should conduct themselves.
Fifty years is a long time in fishing and boy this book shows just how much angling Alan has done – and done well. A great book that I thoroughly enjoyed.

book review

Hi just wanted to say that I'm about halfway through this book and I'm really enjoying it, looking forward to the second half. Many thanks again for your excellent service, Highly recommend.

You don't know me......

Hi Alan,

(you don't know me) but I've just finished reading your book and thought it was a fantastic read. Really enjoyed it, I loved the Mere chapters but probably loved the other fish even more as 'Carp' are all I've read about recently.

I love my carping but you did hit a few chords with me on 'people who carp fish for everything!'. Which I think I'm a little guilty of myself.

Thankfully living in Devon I do have the coast at my disposal and in recent years have made frequent trips up to the Severn and Wye (mostly 'carp fishing' for Barbel,Chub and Zander) You've inspired me to get my float rod out again. I'd almost forgotten about some fantastic Crucian and Perch fishing I did in the past too.
If I find that they are still there and in numbers I will let you know!!
All the best and thanks for 'your' memories..

Giles

Customer service

Dear David,

I just wanted to drop you a quick line to thank you for your excellent customer service. I received the Derek Stritton and Alan Tomkins books and was very pleased to see that you had indeed managed to get both signed for me, I really do appreciate this.

With regard to these books, I have read the Derek Stritton one now and really enjoyed it, however the Alan Tomkins book I must say is promising to be amazing. I have only read 4 chapters so far but the standard of writing and the humour is already placing it up there with the best fishing books I have ever read, if it continues like that throughout the entire book it will indeed be a classic.

Thanks again as I really enjoy your publications, they are always of a very high standard and I look forward to purchasing many more in the future
