I bring you some sad news that angling legend and elder statesmen Derrick Davenport passed away on 7th August 2010, aged 90.

We have been working on Derrick's book 'Fishing for Life' for a year and the book is now available but it's very sad that Derrick died just 3 days before the books were delivered so he never got to see the finished product, that upsets us but hopefully now his name will live on as the legend that he truly was.

This is the long awaited angling autobiography by one of angling's true elder statesmen, Derrick Davenport.

Now, at 90 years of age, his passion and enthusiasm for the great sport of angling is as strong as the day he caught his first fish at two years of age. The fish was a stickleback caught in a penny net and was rushed home to proudly show his dad.

At that moment a love was born, a love that persisted when other loves, throughout a long life have died or mellowed.

Since that day Derrick has gone on to fish a great variety of waters at home and abroad, catching specimens of many species, some exotic, the world over.

His spirit of adventure also shines through and it is no wonder when one hears about some of his exploits.

For example, how many men would start skiing at the age of 59 years of age and end up careering fearlessly down an Olympic ski slope and survive to tell the tale?

Derrick Davenport is one of the greatest characters angling has ever known and it's unlikely that we will see his likes again, he also happens to be one of the most humble and down to earth gentlemen one could meet, despite his many talents and achievements.

In this book he writes of his early days in angling, where he fished waters such as Redmire, Wadhurst, The Hampshire Avon and The Great Ouse, of his times with Dick Walker, the Taylor brothers and other anglers of that forgotten era.

He then takes us fishing around the world, as far afield as Australia and many other countries in between, including Norway, Alaska, Florida and Madeira to name but a few. He also seems to have the 'knack' of catching big fish wherever he goes but loves nothing more than returning home to his beloved Hampshire Avon for a spot of float fishing on pin and cane.

Angling legend Fred J Taylor wrote the foreword shortly before his death and John Searl the introduction, both write with genuine affection and admiration about their great friend Derrick.

This book is a 'must' for all who appreciate the true spirit of angling and adventure.
